Fast Fashion Remake 2023
“900 million articles of clothing were distributed to Africa in 2021” -Changing Markets Foundation
Clothing is sold to be resold in markets, used for fuel to cook food or dumped. Colors of many with labels such as Nike, H & M, and Gap are sold in the marketplaces. If they have stains, holes or torn then they are used for fuel; or thrown in the landfills or next to the marketplaces, schools and homes. When scraps or whole items are used for fuel then the fibers and chemicals from the clothes fly into the air and into the airways of community members. Plus, piles of clothing are covering the grassy hills and filling the blue oceans causing unsanitary and unsafe conditions (Changing Markets Foundation, 2023)
What will we do about it? Stand by and watch the people comb clothes in landfills, breathe in chemicals from the fuel, and eat fish filled with micro plastics. Not to mention, allow for children and people to labor over making the clothes for 12-20 hours a day in harmful environments and without breaks. Plus, allow for models, photographers and makeup/hair stylists to go with little to no pay during small to large scale fashion shows.
Or will we change our buying habits, sign petitions and educate our community? We can choose to change the industry with our personal buying habits. If we shop at thrift stores and vintage shops then the fast fashion industry has to change how they conduct business. We should care about the brands we are endorsing as some are hiding the fact that they are enslaving people and contributing to toxic waste both pre and post production. If fashion companies are conducting inhuman affairs then we should hold them accountable with petitions, peaceful protests and new laws. In addition, educate people and businesses within our and other communities to change their buying habits on products (plus packaging for business) which in turn changes the fashion industry. The industry doesn’t affect just one life but all!
If we continue to just watch it happen, then who are we really as human beings?
