In light of Human Trafficking Awareness Month 2023, I wanted to highlight Tony’s Chocolonely 🍫🍫🍫 Read in about five to ten minutes:)

Consumerism has never dropped off. Did you know that "US consumers, businesses and government entities....in 2019...purchased $1.77 trillion, not billion or million on food and beverages? (U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Food Prices and Spending, 2022)" We buy to fill our stomachs, closets and homes. Do we think about the people whom pluck the fruit, thread the needles, or mix the chemicals?

Tony's Chocolate hasn't stopped at 20% which is the mark that you need to receive the Fair Trade Badge (Fairtrade International, Fairtrade Marks, 2022). Instead, they have fought to gain 100% freedom for those whom produce, test, market and sell the product.

My goal for 2023 is to stop supporting Nestle and Hershey’s fully. I have over the last couple of years bought Fair Trade Chocolate mostly with a couple of handfuls of snack size candy bars. My commitment is to stop altogether.

My challenge is for you to stop buying CHOCOLATE from producers whom don't have the Fair Trade Symbol, even if that means waiting a week or month to buy chocolate. Commit to 3 months, then 6 months, next a year and finally years after. Wouldn't you rather support than enslave families, mothers and brothers?

***Check for fair trade marks (See Photo Below) then check the back of the product to see which ingredients are sourced fair (Fairtrade International, Fairtrade Marks, 2022). Then you can decide whether to purchase the product.
