I attended the Refashion Panel on February 26th where I heard from incredible speakers about sustainability, empowerment and refashion goals. Here’s the notes that I jotted down from the event:) 

I apologize for no context for the first two comments…but I still think the answers are important.

Veronica Pome’e:

People don’t care unless cool.

Document Series in August featuring the South Pacific. How to make community… climate change cool. 

Hannah Holman:

Rough couple of years, jump through hoops, someone else will do so I must do it, why am I here? 

See women and garments together as expendable. 

Attend factory tour: In Studio had aircon, below in the factory not all in masks and no air con. 

Q: What support is in the industry and how to solve problem instead of being apart of the problem?

Nathalia Novaes:

Equality- make money, work with brands

Merle Liivand:

Wake up call. Competitive world. Parents frustrated as the suit only lasts 3 times; and they work hard for suits. I created a suit that lasts 2 years even with factors of soap, chlorine, and sun.

Lack of Diversity, Inclusitivioty 

Women- Confident. 1st Sport Illustrator Polynesian Model. 

Dream bigger because I see me

Bigger social responsibility 

Haitian Island-grow up to believe girls matter and are heard. 

Women are Natural Natures, Cultivate better leaders for male. 

Merle Liivand:

People be healthy, embrace who you are and expand the next generation.

Nathalia Novaes:

Be comfortable to be who you are (size of lips, curves)

Q: Fashion Brought Joy and Positivity?

Hannah Holman: 

Cultures, religions, beliefs… open my mind. Love to collaborate, creative outlet. Use art forms/culture maker.

Minimalist, small close, struggle for 2 hours to find an outfit. 

Feel connected, not to consumerism. Buy what I really want. Donate. Rid of anxiety.

Design with client

Shuffle in grandma and mom closet.

Repurpose, relayer, reuse a piece of 4 or 5 different outfits

Creativity and intelligence: fun and guard down

Starve, diets, hide self, lose self

Society: not attractive if you’re not the size

Hannah Holman:

Research 8 years ago, startling info.: immigrants undocumented….modern slavery

Global: human factor have to address it

Human rights issues: sustainability

Merle Liivand:

Do so much to be seen

Beauty of social media: Role Model

Protect black lives

Sustainability and privilege intercept?

Advocating for everything across the board

Privilege to have access to information about sustainability

Leaderless movement: every single one of us apart of it waits for the big leader

Donate with purpose, not dumping ground, some can’t be recycled
