NYCFairTrade interviews I.Wander.Through
NYCFairTrade: What does fashion mean to you?
I.Wander.Through: Big part of educating….consumer.. pieces timeless.
Don’t have fashion background but art background
Upcycle them. A lot of creativity in all of us…. we can use to refashion
Recently lace and fab scrap
Cut a lot of lace pieces: give them a second life.
NYCFairTrade: Love that lace. How do you see us building NYC future?
I.Wander.Through: NYC is dear to my heart….this city took me in. Adopted me. About togetherness, community. For NYC Coalition has been a great place to work together… designers, makers.
NYCFairTrade: How can we work together?
I.Wander.Through: Not just our part but the consumer. Even with our dollar. Try not always, know where our stuff is coming from. Means paying a bigger price. I know who made it, the waste part of it
Educating, reading and researching and what we are paying for.
Dye vintage stuff. batch with indigo.
Designs with natural dyes. Make some patterns with the dye
Three quarter sleeve: can extend, yoga, dance.
NYCFairTrade interviews eddys_brand
Eddys_Brand: I am Karla. Founder of Eddys Brand. More sustainable for children wear
Remake out of sweaters-pullovers, beanies…
Some items [to purchase] on instagram and facebook or buy one offs
All upcycle cotton
3D printed buttons from recycle plastic on shoulders: all black, logo in black. Keep it simple. Not new buttons for new color
NYCFairTrade: What does refashion mean to you?
Eddys_Brand: Make do with what we have. We have enough stuff that exists. Figure out how to rework things we already have. In home or through fab scrap. I knew that I was making new clothes for parents.… And if its made thick-lasts for a long time.
Partner with someone who unravels-we have to have it. That’s how the relationship started
NYCFairTrade: Cotton good. Cotton thirsty crop. Not perfect answer. Use Eddies sustainable..
How do you see our city rebuilding in future?
Eddys_Brand: Collaboration over competition: Alyssa said
I think. Knit all day make 10 sweaters not going to move the needle. Need 100 of me doing something like this. Or 1000, to make the difference. How to give more value to customer? Not what am I going to make? Who else is doing children’s clothes-to partner with.
…Give the items to families in need. Love to see how we can continue to collect them back when families are finished with them. A lot of things are in really good condition. Limited stains. Almost perfect condition. Happen in landfill after charity can’t sell. Been working on calculating what I have so far. Microc-ompany-Over 200 lbs in a landfill. If we all do a little bit. All adds up.
I have gift cards on the website….I’ll answer any questions you have. www.edysbrand.com
Alter New working on this already. Anyone want to help mender database: Tap in I have this lace. Anyone looking for lace. As a sewer and maker: have this extra stuff. People are wanting small things. Reach out.

NYCFairTrade interviews Yanawaranyc
Yanawaranyc: I am from Bolivia. We choose the pieces. We the customers. Our motto: pieces last forever. We love natural fibers. Alpaca Fiber. Introducing Llama this year. Natural fibers: sustainable. Not polluting the environment. Security in housing and education. Natural colors and natural dyes. To investigate in natural dyes…designing timeless and seasonless. You could keep for the next winter and for the next and the next. Even if it’s wool, like Alpaca. Lightweight. Bunch of styles in scarves.
NYCFairTrade: [Picturing] Lightweight alpaca: on beach with a guitar.
Yanawaranyc: Refashion to take care more of people. Take care of producers and artisans making the pieces. Impacting their lives. Similarity in making. Trying to not have over extra weight. We tested and produced. Innovating in a bunch of colors. Working with fair trade. Care of the people. Fair trade principles. Take care of the people for the producers and consumers. Be able to provide. Not asking for high prices.
NYCFairTrade: Perspective: Taking care of the items that we have. love.
Yanawaranyc: 5th year here in community, in NY. Able to be with community…be able to collaborate. In this movement. sustainable fashion. Protest against fast fashion industry. To collaborate. NYCFairTrade interviews Alternew_official:
Alternew_official: Nancy Rose founded Alter New: Mission personalized alternatives, sustainably
15 years in shoe industry problem….became obsessed with alternations
Through my interviews and market research… [example of someone have] one alterations in trunk of car for at least 6 months. Same position. The barrier not price but convenience. Master tailor or dry cleaner- community, work with each other. Not one sided.
Launch on March 13…pivot and adapt- New York City Face Mask, 40,000 hand sewn for FrontLiners and Emergency Response.
One of our biggest plays, connecting with consignment stores and fab scrap.
If you want to have an alteration site too, impact together
NYCFairTrade: Being apart of the solution and not the problem. Great to connect people, grow with the community.
Refashion week mean to you?
Alternew_official: See regional ad on subways…Magical.. Look into it more.
Saw ThreadUp… second hand: opportunity: be apart of the story instead of off the rack. Because we are experiential. Connect to clothing.
Be a shoe designer, work with buyer. Buyer tweak something on the shoe. Always think…did they want to be apart of the story put on the floor?
I don’t want to be a part of the fashion industry but the refashion industry.
Bag of clothes, 14% will wear and the rest of it won’t make it somewhere else…not tangible solution. Please do donate. Alteration hub-recycle in more ways. Donate will get that next use. Thread up. Did you know thread up sells bags by size?
People are wising up. No green washing. Tangible solutions. Tactical…long term solution.
Refashion like the word…should be sustainable and refashioning.
NYCFairTrade: How do you see our city rebuilding in NY?
Alternew_official: Personally, moved 11 years ago from California. Dream and in culturally rich society. I’ll be honest, even now. Culturally rich society. Able to be outdoors, we went to this bar to watch football…turns out she was a Broadway Star. Convinced her to sing show tunes on rooftop bar.
Innovative and creative…maybe not on the same way
NYFairTrade: Randomly talking to someone you never met. Energy that everyone feels
Alternew_official: Sassy introverts…LA aggressive extroverts. Walk up to someone and say tell me about yourself.
NYCFairTrade: Going to steal the term sassy introverts.
How to work together?
Alternew_official: Interested 10% off alterations: www.alternew.com if you attend this session.
Shoe designer by day. Alter New not side hustle but hustle hustle.
NYCFairTrade: So your doing everything?
Alternew_official: Able to focus…. what pandemic is everyone else in?
NYCFairTrade: What your doing is amazing. Need for what your doing. I know so many people that they want to bring and be apart of that community. Excited to see where the company goes.
Alternew_official: Come watch me host at 3 pm. Thank you so much for joining us.
NYCFairTrade interviews Cauz_for_pawz_thrift_boutique [Katherine and Amber]
Cauz_for_pawz_thrift_boutique: Katherine: 594 now up to 604, dogs, cats and pets that would be put down. Keep food pantry. People come with masks and 6 ft. Come get food for animals. Lots of donations. 10 1/2 years old [business]. Split up the store: half or more than half for $5 [clothing] and walk out with $20 for a whole outfit.
Amber: Katherine Social Capital: work with her for 3 years. Talking about sustainability: community- part of life not chore….
Ship items to Katherine from Florida or North Carolina. Helping the animals.
Katherine: Because the other thing, we do what we say. True vintage. Not the new vintage.
[pick out a ] blouse but Amber will [build with other clothing and] jewelry. Sustainability. All re-sellable All volunteer…
Need a coat don’t have money. We will help them. Community driven.
Amber and Katherine: Nothing should go into landfill. Go to thrift store and buy something. The woman we will send people- recommend the other organization. We have outlets throughout the world. Sorting process- this new life cycle- another thrift store or international outlets-repurpose-summer oriented- Dominican Republic….
So tattered: down cycle. Parson students and fashion students: miss button or broken seam… fix it and bring it back.
Amber: Experiment with rental pieces. Don’t know what to do with. So rent it and bring it back in good condition.
Always a use for something. Trust factor in that. Authentic. 1920s party-authentic dress and hat. Please take care of it and brought it back. Bought us a pizza. We work with our customers. Younger ones coming in to hold people accountable
NYCFairTrade: Voting with our dollars. Really great people standing up for it. Everyone has a power for changing with small ways.
Katherine: Tell older people-clean out your estates. Some people, yo Katherine.
Truth of the factor to start the process….just to start the process.
We pick up. Given a car.
In business for 30 years.
See the city, what it was- 30s and 40s if they do come back, rent lower, in the village. Dead in Murray Hill. Age group come back with sustainability. More people with Brita Filter. A lot of the people come back strong. Will die here. Think will go through rough patch.
Spirit of New York connect with people and that kind of thing.
Katherine and Amber: Watching the growth-small tree with branches. Only get better. Just a year ago. Stay on top of it. Only get better. More and more people coming together. Not destroy environment…really matters. It’s not one…one in addition to. One shirt, don’t put in thrift store, other people will use it in other countries. Have clothing generations wear. Eileen Fisher-Mint Condition.
Reinvent and repurpose. How many life cycles? Love estate cycles, 70s, 80s….
NYCFairTrade: Show and Tell?
Katherine: All stray-spay and neuter
Animal not miss a meal
Work on program in Staten Island- feed 24 cats
Help in the community
Anyone you know that needs to donate.
NYCFairTrade interviews Roomtogroworg
Roomtogroworg: I’m in Brooklyn right now…..1 hour long-development/milestones, early intervention needs. 2nd half-material distribution- $10,000 [worth of] items in three years. Financial hardship- books, toys, linen, clothing, equipment, feeding, hygiene..2nd half of visit, continue the conversation.
Some of the results 9 out of 10 children meet milestones, more than what you would see in low income…. want parents to leave program to make decisions and advocate outside the family.
NYCFairTrade: One moment? Or a passion?
Roomtogroworg: Me personally? Passion project. Moved into New York, 4 years ago. Working florist, event support. Missing community aspect. Looking for volunteer. Source New York materials…. Passion project as well as my job.
NYCFairTrade: Solution to problem…Making everything better. Leaving families in good place…
Refashion mean to you?
Roomtogroworg: I think for me, not just shift in consumer mindset. Great to donate items. Items for us, good quality into family’s homes. Recycled or redistributed in community-both textiles and hard goods.
NYCFairTrade: Good thought process….
Roomtogroworg: Not a good piece for you..not evolution or in your style. [Be reused] Kids in our program grow really fast. We try to help and families that need them a little bit more.
We do encourage families to pass on. So that continue a life beyond our program.
NYCFairTrade: How do you see our city rebuilding?
Roomtogroworg: Katherine talked about. Conversation bigger than before. See in trends 75% distribute-collection drives, drop box. Remaining 25% corporate donations. Lower the barrier to entry….intentional structure to donate items.
Meeting people where they are at. Conditions where they are at.
NYCFairTrade: How to work together? Refashion come true.
Roomtogroworg : More about collaboration over competition. Several other types of work: Swindle Society-trade in for other sizes. They donate younger sizes and we can send them older sizes….Many versions in the industry.
NYCFairTrade: 20 other people doing the same thing. You will bring something new to it. 2 of them will work together to make the solution.
Roomtogroworg : Contactless resume for baby items. Refashion week for Manhattan Center. One up for this week, all by appointment. Bringing in Pjs this month.
NYCFairTrade: Everyone go and donate! Go follow on instagram.
NYCFairtrade interviews Stellalucchi_
Stellalucchi: My name is Luce. Take funky pieces, make new pieces.
Donated [an item] to refashion week, Keep textiles out of the landfills. Go to refashion week-section for virtual auction. Raise some money
NYCFairtrade: What does refashion mean to you?
Stellalucchi_:Take something existing, to refashion. Unwanted jewelry- upcycle and refashion
Unwanted chandelier, and unwanted beads to put together
AlterNew-vest.
Tie dye- Ice dying for the first time. Take clothing scrunched up and pour ice cubes on the clothing. Old roots to teenage- use dye. Put powder over the ice cubes, whatever you get. Melt. For more than 12 hours to melt, not sure why not melt.
Organic. You never know. You work a lot with a thrift boutique
Sell Y2Q Thrift- Long Island-model of thrift store-loved that my stuff was upcycle and ask if I would want to sell some of the stuff. Help revamp in his store. Make vintage boutique in store. Back store-furniture. Organizing and virtual merchandising. Looking prettier. Got into tie dying. He had a lot of things with stains in it-now it looked cool.
Love layers of collaborations. Helping each other which is awesome.
Upcycle jewelry. My dream like fab scrap-drop off jewelry. I take broken jewelry- take it apart. volunteers would come and want to know how to upcycle jewelry.
Found someone in London- first one to be apart of the collective. International, donate unwanted jewelry. Mail them unwanted jewelry. Weigh… give voucher to purchase on site. Revamp the website.
NYCFairtrade: City rebuilding in future?
Stellalucchi_:Need an intellectual response…need to come up with something…don’t need to sound intelligent.
We help each other. Support each other I’ve done so much. So many opportunities since I stumbled upon it. More people collaborating. Queens members of New York City Coalition. Community center- more people coming together to see the community- swap shop. Gone to Maine-father gave containers of broken jewelry. Cool farm house- people drop off. People come drop and take what they want. Department of Sanitation doing that. I know that the stop and shop- share and collaborate.
NYCFairtrade: Anything else you want to show and tell
